Paul Ryan has an intrinsic love of the landscape. His beloved vision of the rugged coastline of Thirroul, south of Sydney, where pacific breakers meet the monolithic escarpment—is the stage from which he plays out his visual commentary on Australian history. His work has become synonymous with the best of expressive contemporary Australian painting and his evocative technique has influenced a generation of artists.
Ryan has been a finalist 13 times in the coveted Archibald Prize, five times in the Wynne and seven times in the Sulman Prize. He has been a finalist in several other art prizes and is represented in many important public collections including: Mosman Art Gallery, Wollongong Regional Art Gallery, Wollongong University Collection, Artbank, Manly Art Gallery, Lismore Regional Gallery, Geelong Regional Gallery and numerous Australian private collections.
The limited edition prints in this collection are based on the most sought-after paintings from his 2020 exhibition at Nanda\Hobbs titled, "South Pacific".
